The FlockYou Audio Flock Camera Detector is a compact, privacy-focused wireless awareness tool preloaded with FlockYou-style WiFi detection firmware.

This audio-alert model relies entirely on sound for feedback — it has no LED indicator. Detection events are communicated through the onboard speaker only, making it ideal for discreet or eyes-free use. It is configured in normal Flock OUI detection mode, meaning it is designed to alert only when it sees WiFi frames matching known Flock camera OUI signatures, rather than alerting for every nearby phone, router, hotspot, or unrelated WiFi device.

This device is intended for researchers, privacy advocates, journalists, hobbyists, and people who want better awareness of nearby ALPR and surveillance infrastructure. It passively monitors nearby 2.4 GHz WiFi activity for known Flock-related indicators and provides simple audible alerts when a suspected device is detected.

This is a passive awareness and research tool only. It does not jam, disable, bypass, interfere with, authenticate to, or connect to Flock Safety cameras or any other networked device.

Flock is rapidly changing their firmware and hardware — this won't detect every Flock camera; our firmware updates regularly with new signatures.

The firmware is based on open-source FlockYou research and tooling from Colonel Panic and a fork of the public colonelpanichacks/flock-you GitHub project called flock-you-esp32 by SimeonOnSecurity.

How to Use

Plug the detector into a USB-C power source such as a wall adapter, power bank, laptop, or vehicle USB adapter. Once powered on, the device begins passively monitoring nearby 2.4 GHz WiFi activity.

Since this model has no LED, all status feedback comes through sound. When a suspected Flock camera signature is detected, the device will play an audible chirp alert. If the same suspected device remains nearby, the detector will continue producing periodic quiet heartbeat beeps. Silence means no matching signatures have been observed.

For best results:

Place the device where it has a clear view of nearby wireless signals
Avoid placing it inside metal enclosures, glove boxes, or heavily shielded areas
Use it while walking, driving, or surveying areas where ALPR or surveillance camera presence is being researched
Treat detections as indicators, not absolute proof
Confirm findings with additional research, visual observation, public records, or mapping tools where appropriate

Detection range and reliability can vary based on distance, antenna orientation, building materials, vehicle placement, local WiFi congestion, and how nearby camera hardware is configured.

Advanced Use / Serial Output

Where supported by the installed firmware and public FlockYou tooling, the detector can output detection events over USB serial at 115200 baud.

Advanced users may use this output for local logging, dashboard display, GPS-assisted wardriving, or other research workflows.

Dashboard, logging, or app-based use may require additional software setup by the user. This listing is for the preloaded detector hardware.

Flashing your own compatible device is usually manageable when you follow the project guide. STS Collective provides a ready-to-use flashed device for customers who prefer convenience. You do not need to buy a flashed unit to use the project.

Confirm the board revision, firmware target, power requirements, and current release before flashing. Reflashing replaces the installed firmware and may erase settings.

STS Collective develops and flashes STS firmware, or flashes firmware from the original developer identified below. Your order is packaged to represent the physical hardware, not the firmware. When original packaging is supplied, it is OEM packaging for the hardware model. Fulfillment handling sometimes removes original packaging or uses other shipping packaging. Packaging does not identify the firmware developer.

Firmware developer

FlockYou: SimeonOnSecurity developed the installed firmware with sponsorship from STS Collective. The upstream Flock-You project was created by Colonel Panic.

STS Collective flashes the identified firmware before shipment. The installed firmware does not change the source or manufacturer of the physical hardware.

FlockYou does not guarantee detection of 100% of Flock cameras. Its detection methods come from open-source research and testing involving dozens of security and privacy researchers. We have also confirmed successful detections through our own testing, and many users have reported successful detections in real-world use.

If you are not receiving detections from known cameras, we would be happy to troubleshoot the device with you. Several factors might affect detection, and without troubleshooting, we do not yet know why you are not seeing results.

It is a little hit and miss. There are Flocks I see that do not alert and there are alerts where I do not see Flocks. There are also Flocks that I see that alert only when I am stopped near them at a stop light and did not alert when I merely drive by when the light is green. Seemingly there are Flocks that do not emit the expected signal signatures? There may be Flocks that are well hidden? My impression is that more often the Flocks that do alert seem to be privately subscribed and more often the ones that do not alert are city or county subscribed?

Thank you for the detailed feedback, Grady! What you’re describing lines up with an important limitation of how FlockYou works.

FlockYou relies on publicly observable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi characteristics identified through open-source research. It does not communicate with the cameras themselves, so detection depends on the wireless activity present at the time and whether the system produces one or more signatures FlockYou recognizes.

This also explains why stopping near a camera sometimes produces a detection while driving past it does not. A longer observation window gives the device more opportunities to observe matching wireless activity.

Alerts without a visible camera are also possible. The associated equipment might not be obvious from the road, or another nearby device might produce characteristics matching FlockYou’s detection methods.

Your observation about privately versus publicly operated systems is interesting. We do not have enough evidence to say ownership or subscription type explains the difference, but reports like yours are useful for improving the open-source detection research.
